PANAMÁ. The Ministry of Public Works started the rehabilitation of the roads and construction of the bridges around Via Israel, the Americas Bridge and the South Corridor. It is expected that the works will affect around 150,000 drivers who use those roads everyday.

Benjamin Colamarco, the Minister of Public Works said that they are working against the clock.

They are aiming to complete on time and in the middle of a political campaign the Coastal Strip, the widening of the Arraijan-Chorrera highway, the widening of the Americas Bridge and the installation of nine vehicular bridges in the capital city.

Colamarco announced the closure to the way of access of the South Corridor from September 24 to October 7 until the works are finished. They are building the columns that will support the bridge that will connect the South Corridor with Via Israel.

The works will take two weeks and will block the exits of the South Corridor going towards Panama, in front of the Paitilla Medical Center.

Driver using this way will have to take the road that goes towards Marbella, while the entrance ramp that gives access to the South Corridor, in front of Multicentro will have only one lane.

Colamarco said that from September 25 to the end of March 2009 the cables that sustain the Americas Bridge will be changed as part of its maintenance work.
