PANAMA. At least four prisoners escaped yesterday from the “La Joyita” prison, located 40 kilometers north west of the capital city, said the television channel TVN.

Unofficial sources said that the four inmates were part of the gang “Los Perros de San Joaquin.” They escaped from wings four and five of the detention center after cutting the wire fence that separates the prison from the street.

Apparently, two of the escapees were captured by the police, who have already started the search for the prisoners in the forest area close by to the jail.

The authorities have not given any explanations about the details of this escape and they are checking buses and private vehicles that travel the area as well as houses near the prison.

This is not the first time prisoners escaped from this detention center and it is not unusual to have a couple of breakouts every few months.

Recently smuggled weapons, cellular phones and drugs were confiscated and recently a prisoner was murdered.

Last week, the National Prison Service director, Luis Gordon went on vacation, prompting speculations that he has resigned his post due to the lack of support he has been receiving from the Ministry of Government.
