PANAMA. Two cases of domestic violence are denounced every day in Panama, says the Social Development Ministry (MIDES).

According to a recent MIDES report, 57 domestic violence cases were reported in April, of which 52 ere against women and five against men.

During the first four months of 2009, 183 cases were reported, some of which resulted in deaths, said MIDES.

Of April’s 57 cases, 25 were complaints of emotional violence, 28 of physical violence, and four of patrimonial violence.

The report links drugs and alcohol consumption to the social problem.

Most of the cases dealt with by MIDES are related to legal problems or issues with paternity, divorce, alimony, or children visitation rights.

Despite the Family Code, which protects women and children, domestic violence has become a chronic problem for MIDES and family courts.
