PANAMA. The numbers are falling fast for the construction industry.

According to the Comptroller's Office, in the first five months of 2009, investments fell 17.5 percent in comparison with the same period in 2008.

Construction permits this year totaled $560.3 millions, however last year they took in $679.2 millions. A drop of 52.3 percent was registered last May.

Sources in the sector say 8000 jobs have been lost.

The industry hopes mega projects like the new government city will stimulate the sector’s economy.
