PANAMA. High blood pressure and diabetes are the principal causes of death in Panama, said the Gorgas Institute director, Nestor Sosa.

Twenty percent of Panamanians suffer from high blood pressure which makes them vulnerable to strokes and heart attacks, according to studies that are currently being carried out by the institute.

Diabetes is also widespread and can cause blindness, gangrene and death, if not managed properly.

The Gorgas’ study aims to identify the age groups most vulnerable to these diseases and find out if a change in Panamanians’ diet who are eating more fast foods has contributed to the increase in cases in certain parts of the country, as they become more obese.
