The Civil Protection Service director, Jose Francisco Sucre said that the incident occurred because the heavy rain fell in the mountain regions causing rivers to swell up, surprising the residents of more than 30 neighborhoods.

According to Sucre, the rivers Pacora, Juan Diaz and Tocumen burst their banks, damaging 657 houses and commercial establishments.

The residents of those areas were trapped for nearly ten hours, once the ordeal started at 3:00 p.m.

Witnesses said that the flood started rather quickly and when the Juan Diaz river burst its banks left Los Pueblos mall completely isolated.

Meanwhile the meteorology manager of the Electric Transmission Enterprise, Luz Graciela de Calzadilla said that the incident that happened last Friday was normal for the wet season.

However the burst of rain in the mountain areas provoked a precipitation between 100 and 150 millimeters in three hours.

So far there have not been casualties, but the Emergency Operations Center continues to work in its headquarter in Howard, with the support of the National Police, the Red Cross and other organizations. The cleaning operations have already started.
