PANAMA. Residential mortgage applications in Panama have slowed down in comparison of last year, said a report of the risk assessment company Equilibrium.
In January 2008 the residential mortgage applications registered a growth of 13.4 per cent, but in 2009 they only showed an increase of 10.1 percent.
It is expected that the trend will continue at least until the end of the year.
The report also pointed out that more people are falling behind with their mortgage payments.
The mortgage arrears sector represents 35 percent of all the total arrears of the the banks.
The Equilibrium’s analysis showed that the higher inflation and the levels of indebtedness of Panamanian families has influenced the increase of mortgage arrears.
Mortgages represent 25 percent of all the loans given by the banks in Panama and are worth $5.5 billion.
