PANAMA. The sentence of Alvaro Aurelio Mejia was changed from four years in jail to a $14,600 fine although he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, when he over irradiated 28 patients at the National Cancer Institute causing their deaths. The incident happened in 2000 and since then new measures have been put in place.

The judge, hearing the case also replaced the sentences of two others implicated in the case Alexis Alveo Gonzalez and Olivia Saldaña Gonzalez with a fine of $7,300 each that they will have to pay to National Treasury in a six months period.

The decision to change the sentences answered the petition of the forensic lawyers, Mejia & Asociados, and Eliecer Chacon.

They argued that the Penal Code allows the replacement of jail terms by fines in cases where the sentence is up to four years in prison and the people involved are first time offenders.
