Police forces are on the hunt for the heads of a powerful Mexican drugs gangs accused of the execution of Colombians Jose Antonio Bello and Idler Hernández, who entered the country this month.
A police source said that this is the biggest police operation since the war between Colombian and Mexican mafias was unleashed.
In less than 24 hours, the police carried out 13 raids on houses and apartments in the areas of Punta Paitilla and Bella Vista, where the hitmen are presumably hiding.
Police believe that Bello and Hernandez were executed by Mexican hitmen as part of the dispute to control the main maritime routes in Panama, where AK-47 rifles are exchanged for drugs with FARC (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia).
Last year, 540 people linked to narco trafficking were captured in police operations, including 367 Panamanians, 69 Colombians, 25 Mexicans, and 16 Jamaicans.
The most important captives of last year include William Tamayo Hernandez, who was the right hand man of the heir to the Valle del Norte cartel, notorious drug trafficker Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadia (known as “Chupeta), who was extradited to the US.
