The government is planning to merge the Savings Bank (Caja de Ahorros), the National Bank (Banco Nacional - BNP) National Mortgage Bank (Banco Hipotecario Nacional -BHN) and the Agricultural Development Bank (Banco de Desarollo Agropecuario – ADB), a presidential spokesman said.
The proposal is being discussed by the Minster of Economy and Finances, Alberto Vallarino, together with the Manager of the BNO, Dario Berbey and the provisional Superintendent of Banks, Alberto Diamond. The heads of the four banks chose not to comment on the forthcoming merger. Both the BDA and BHN are facing problems due to the high number of clients defaulting on their loans.
