PANAMA. Fruit and vegetable importer Fyffes has bought a pineapple plantation and other related assets in Panama in Central America in a deal worth around $8 million.

Fyffes is buying the assets from Agroindustries Golden West (GOPA). The operation covers around 450 hectares.

Fyffes says that, combined with its existing pineapple farms in Costa Rica, it expects the combined operations will produce around 50 percent of the pineapples it markets in 2010.

Meanwhile, the multinational Del Monte, which was negotiating a deal for $54 million to rent 3,000 hectares of banana plantations with the Panamanian Autonomous Cooperative Institute (IPACOOP), withdrew its offer.
