Call centers are slave labor, long hours for little money

PANAMA. I think Phil Edmonston’s comments in a column (June 9) referring to Panama call Centers wages is basically incorrect.

I agree that there are approximately 6000 people working in the aforementioned facilities. However, a small fraction earn your reported $800 + wage packet per month.

The majority of call centres start at $500 basic of which social/health is deducted from this basic income.

However, if you sell or have good attendance (which is rare in Panama because the work is so mundane!) then you will receive additional commission etc.

There are call centres like 'Language Line' & reported 'Porn Sites' which earn significant wages but, generally speaking one has to be a manager to earn $800+.

Believe me having worked at Clientlogic for three months with a 42.5 hours working week they are barely on minimum wage (This included every Saturday A.M. 08.00-1.00).

That is why I am now an English Teacher; I can earn more in one day than I did in a week at a call centre! Believe me it is slave labor.
