PANAMA. The government of President Ricardo Martinelli authorized the demolition of two houses that were constructed next to the sea in Amador, alleging that the concessions of Las Brisas de Amador, S. A. failed to fulfil the law.

The demolition was authorized Tuesday afternoon by the president himself. At the time of going to press, civil servants and a road team of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) looked set to demolish the structures located on Perico Island.

Company representatives demanding that a judicial order be in place before any measures were taken by the government were ordered to vacate the area by members of the National Police.

Las Brisas de Amador has been charged with illegally sequestering land measuring 28,000 square meters. The company also owes the State an additional $3 million.

The Perico Island houses are just the latest in a series of crackdowns on Amador land, in what is becoming one of the first big movements of new president Ricardo Martinelli's term.
