PANAMÁ. A meeting between President Ricardo Martinelli and representatives of the Industrialist Union has produced a 10 percent reduction in the commercial and residential electricity tariff, say sources who attended the meeting.
At the meeting, Martinelli stated that the reduction was agreed upon after he was able to reach a consensus with the companies dedicated to the generation, transmission and distribution of electric energy.
The lowering of the tariff would be the second such move in less then two months, after the July 1 reduction went in affect.
But the issue of energy also focused on hydrocarbons.
Martinelli met with representatives of the oil industry responsible for the distribution of fuel in the country, “in order to look for alternatives that would allow lower prices for consumers.”
During the encounter, new ideas were proposed that would promote more efficiency in the transport of the oil and as a consequence lowering costs for all parties involved.
Panama has the highest electricity tariff in Central America.
