Bocas del Toro. Police discovered four rifles, a shotgun a.22 revolver and a 25 calibre pistol after searching a supermarket in Chiriqui Grande. Police are trying to establish where the weapons came from.

Panama. Five uniformed youths claiming to be from the Instituto Nacional closed down Martyrs Avenue yesterday. Teachers and students said the youths were not registered as students in the school. The youths were taken to the San Cristobal police station and interviewed by Minister of Education, Lucy Molinar. She said she refused to be intimidated by street demonstrations or violence but that the youths grievances would be looked into.

Colon. Students from the Instituto Professional y Tecnico also protested in the streets yesterday, complaining of the lack of teachers and classrooms. There are just 160 teachers for 2,000 students. The student representative said that they want to be taken seriously by the Ministry of Education and that graduating and fifth year students are about to lose the year unless the situation is resolved shortly.

Panama. President Ricardo Martinelli confirmed that he will meet Friday with workers from the Colon Duty Free Zone (ZLC) who are protesting against the government’s proposals to tax their businesses. However, it seems unlikely that he can be persuaded to hold off on the new charges. such as health, transport and security.
