Panamá: “Everything ready for the WYD”, Monsignor Ulloa

The Archbishop of Panama and the Local Organizing Committee for the World Youth Day (WYD) president, Monsignor José Domingo Ulloa, talked to La Estrella de Panama about the last meeting he had with Pope Francis in the Vatican in preparation for the activity that will gather thousands of youths from all over the world.

HOW WAS YOUR ENCOUNTER WITH THE SUPREME PONTIFF?

Very fraternal and we shared the advances in the preparations for the WYD, especially the way we are incorporating the youth and and even children in this event.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION OF THE WYD, WHAT WAS THE MAIN SUBJECT OF YOUR MEETING WITH THE POPE (SECURITY, HEALTH, MIGRATION, OTHERS)?

We touched on very general topics, especially the pastoral and also the coordination between the diverse institutions of the Holy See that have to do with the WYD organization. We have to understand that this is overseen by different dicasteries, which are like ministries, and each one is responsible of one aspect (liturgy, security, pastoral, communication and others), and the Pope was very interested and aware of everything.

HOW WILL YOU PREPARE TO GUARANTEE THE SAFETY OF POPE FRANCIS?

We have to remember that the Pope has been invited by the Panamanian State and in that regard the government authorities have coordinated with the papal security bodies.

During the last year multiple meetings have taken place with people responsible for this topic in Panama and they have presented their proposals to their Vatican counterparts and the advancements are noticeable. I have been witness of the good impresion the Vatican Gendarmerie, Domenico Gianni had of plans presented, so we are very confident that the Pope will be very well guarded.

THE WYD IS HERE. ARE WE READY

The execution stage progressed smoothly, and we owe that to the great army of volunteers who have joined to collaborate; engineers, doctors, lawyers, journalists, experts in digital matters, artists, young university students who, like Maria, have responded in a hurry to the call made by the Lord.

DO YOU CONSIDER THAT THE PANAMANIAN POPULATION IS PREPARED FOR WYD?

I have no doubt that Panamanians will do what we have always done at the crossroads of history and when the country calls: we are committed and work hard until the end, with a smile on our faces and open arms to receive the visitor.

WHAT CHANGES WILL THE WYD BRING TO THE COUNTRY?

It is evident that Panama will not be the same after the WYD. I only ask everybody to live the experience now and not resist, because it will be an unforgettable experience. In fact, changes are already being seen, although they are imperceptible. We have people who have grown in organizational and planning matters, experts who have given their contribution so that this country is projected worldwide.
