The tarmac surface fractured in the early hours of Friday morning and continued to get worse during Saturday, provoking a chain of car accidents and serious traffic jams.

The four lanes of the road in front of the Panama Maritime Industrial Park collapsed and sank in, after the subsoil saturated with water left the highway without support.

The maintenance chief of the Public Works Ministry, Jorge Pitalua said that the incident occurred due to a geological fault that has been identified a few years back.

The collapse provoked the closure of the road for over 60 hours and a complete nightmare for those people who were going to the interior or live in the district of Arraijan and Chorrera.

It is expected that repaired works will be finished by Wednesday December 3.
