PANAMA. An available microphone, a tough city, six women and two men in a state of catharsis, all come together in the collage of thoughts and emotions that makes up “Karaoke Emocional” (Emotional Karaoke), the most recent play by the Panamanian Lagartija Theater.

“Karaoke Emocional” returns to stage at La Casona after two successful seasons and after being selected to represent Panama in the recent International Performing Arts Festival 2008.

“Emotional Karaoke” was directed by the Argentinian Mariela Asensio, and with irony and humor it openly speaks about the national idiosyncrasies, covering issues such as frivolity, materialism, consumption, foreign influence, social and gender inequality, among others.

It is a recommendable work that has enchanted all who have seen it, and one of the best independent theater productions held in Panama in years.

The actor David Olmedo, member of the theater company Lagartija, said that the play was born from a visit of the renowned Argentinian director Asensio to Panama.

“Asensio built all of the elements based on our ideas.”

To write the play, Asensio explored the secrets and details of every one of the actors’ lives. “I transformed their thoughts and edited their emotions,” said Asensio.

Check out the play (in Spanish) at La Casona, which is located in Plaza Herrera, Casco Viejo.

The play starts at 8:00 p.m. and tickets cost $8. For more information and reservations, contact 6523-0543.
