PANAMA. The installation ofglobal positioning systems (GPA) on Panama’s buses is the latest idea to surface as authorities seek to cope with the escalating carnage in the public transport system.

Jimmy Papadimitriu, the Presidency Minister, believes the technology could allow detection of speeding and route monitoring.

In a television interview he admitted that the speed limiters President Ricardo Martinelli ordered a week ago won’t solve the transport problem.

The Minister visited the Torrijos-Carter bus station in San Miguelito recently and the visit gave him an insight on the transport problem.

He concluded that the anachronistic system is the cause and not the individual elements of drivers or buses.

”We don't need esthetic changes, we need to start from zero on reforming public transport systems” he said.
