PANAMA. The debate is open once again as to whether the Juan Demostenes Arosemena stadium will have to be demolished after all.

According to engineer Manuel Soriano from the department of infrastructure in the Ministry of Housing, the stadium is so badly deteriorated that it can no longer support its own weight.

He said that experts from the Technological University in Panama who visited the stadium noted the poor condition of the bleachers and said they would need to be demolished and rebuilt.

He said that the university would present a report to MIVI within the next two weeks outlining their findings.

The government’s recent announcement that the stadium was to be demolished aroused such public protests that the authorities backed down and decided it would be restored instead.

They then announced that the stadium would be used as a temporary housing solution for 900 families in Curundu while their homes are rebuilt. Now, it remains to be seen if it is considered fit to serve as a temporary shelter.
