PANAMÁ. There still is no national mark that has been registered by the government for national products.
One product might change that.
Only the “Seco” brand of liquor that is ubiquitous at Panamanian night clubs may be the only product that would qualify for the “country of origin” registry, corrosponding with Peruvian brand “Pisco”, said the Ministery of Commerce and Industries.
Seco is produced by Varela Hermanos, a company owned by Vice President Juan Carlos Varela.
The request for “Seco” to be made national was presented this month as an attempt to find a Panamanian equivalent to the famous Mexican drink, tequila.
If the drink were to obtain a national distinction, not only would it avoid disputes on the origin of the product, but it would also considerably lower tariffs on the product within the country.
